After leaving the Volcanic Region of the North Island, we ventured out to the Coromandel Peninsula. A large sign greets you and tells you that Coromandel is good for the soul. We laughed and kept driving, but after 48 hours, it made more sense.
This region is popular for Auckland residents during their summer holidays. We were lucky enough to go in May, when things have quieted down and there aren’t very many people. Our time was short and pretty relaxing, but I wanted to share the Coromandel highlights.
Mount Maunganui Hike + Post Hike Lunch
We made a great stop on our way to our home for the weekend in Mount Maunganui. This town is right on the water. You can climb to the summit of Mt. Maunganui itself in about an hour with views of the islands and great surf waves below.
After our morning hike, we walked the Main Street in town. There were tons of restaurants, shops and bars. We enjoyed a giant lunch at the Astrolabe Brewbar.
Coastal Drive Through Kiwi Territory
The drive out to Kuaotunu was beautiful. We stopped a few times to take in the views of the coastline. Most of this land is Kiwi territory, so you have to stick to the paths and make sure to follow any posted rules.
The Most Magical Coromandel Treehouse
The place we stayed was amazing. We had the bottom floor of a home built on the side of a hill. The doors swung open to a patio that looked out into the forest. The homeowners built the entire property themselves. It’s beautiful. The gardens are filled with homemade mosaic tiles, succulents, and all the birds.
In the mornings, the rain would fall for 15 minutes or so while we were drinking coffee. Once the morning rain was done, we would wander down the driveway and explore the area. The days were filled with very little. The nights were quiet, and the stars were out. We heard Kiwis calling to each other just feet below us. It truly was good for the soul.
We both wish we would have had more time to enjoy this little slice of heaven. Our hosts were so kind and wonderful. If you are ever heading to this area, here is the link. You will not regret it. Evan and Muriel are so wonderful, and the space is amazing and so unique.
Have you ever been anywhere that was good for your soul? Tell us where it was so we can add it to our list.
