After six months of lockdown in California, we needed an escape – a Montana getaway. Don’t get me wrong, San Diego weather is pretty amazing but sunshine and blue skies every single day in a world that is already a constant repeat (see Groundhog Day) gets a little stale.

We did not take the idea of travel lightly. First of all, Justin gets zero time off with his job, so there was some negotiating and working extra days leading up to our trip. We also take the safety of others very seriously and do not ever want to endanger others with our actions. So, there was a lot of planning ahead of time on how to get there, chatting with the friends we were meeting to make sure their level of safety and comfort was the same as ours and stocking up on things we needed.

In the end, we decided to road trip and car camp on the way there. That decision allowed us to enjoy some time in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. We ordered all our groceries ahead of time and packed plenty of cooler food to get us there and enough for the few days we spent at the Montana house. This helped to avoid any errands for the two weeks before leaving. We brought so much hand sanitizer, a glovebox FULL of clean masks, and so much caution. And because Justin is working and seeing a few people, we got tested for COVID before leaving.

The weekend was spent enjoying fall colors, cooler air and finally getting to see a few friends from Minnesota. We drank champagne, played games, enjoyed roaring fires and even snuck in a few hikes. It was just what we needed to get back into our quarantine routine at home in California.

And just a reminder that if you are planning to get away, go to nature and stay away from people. Bring food from home, wash your hands often, get a COVID test to make sure you aren’t spreading it. Be safe, care for others and care for yourself.
