We could not spend a month on an island without taking a few days to enjoy the ocean. Amed, Bali was the perfect little seaside town for us. It’s on the northern side of Bali and much less visited than the beaches closer to the airport.
We were still working on finalizing our itinerary when we were in New Zealand, and one of our fantastic AirBnB hosts just happened to be a frequent visitor to the island of Bali. They left us with a list of their favorite places and the contact info for a beachside bungalow in the little town of Amed that they could not say enough good things about. We emailed immediately, and within a few hours, we were booked for five nights in Amed, Bali.
Where to Stay in Amed, Bali
Blue Star Bungalows is where we stayed, and we loved it. The staff was incredible, and we met the owner on our first morning. We ate breakfast and dinner there daily (and even a few lunches). They had a masseuse available on the beach, lots of comfortable chairs with umbrellas, and everything you need for snorkeling. Plus, it was an amazing deal.
What to do in Amed, Bali
Sunrises
While we didn’t have a direct view of the sunrise from our spot on the bay, we still enjoyed the peace and quiet of the morning. Getting to see the volcano with no clouds surrounding it was pretty amazing especially since it erupted just days before we arrived.
Snorkeling
This is the main attraction of the area. I shared a bunch of pictures on this post about my first time snorkeling. The reef is right off the shore and very easy to swim to from the beach. There are lots of free dive courses in the town as well.
Seaside Relaxing
Our main objective here was relaxation and it was a successful mission. Our days were spent reading and snorkeling with a wonderful breeze coming from the sea. You could stay in one chair all day ordering coconuts, iced coffees or Bintangs depending on preference.
There are also a couple of bars on the beach that have live music one or two nights a week. It’s fun to get out and meet the other travelers. We hung out with some Aussies and got some great travel advice for our trip there later this summer.
Sunsets
This is the best time of day in Amed. There are a few spots that have great views of the sunset, but the best is Sunset Point. You can grab a drink and sit in the tables set out along the ridge with the most beautiful views of the volcano and the sunset.
Final Thoughts on Amed
If you want to get away from the busy beaches of Kuta and Seminyak (and you should), head north and east. There are many amazing places to snorkel and dive in this part of Bali. Every day was relaxing, and we had everything we needed within a short walk. Our stay at Blue Star was really amazing for us because of the kindness of the staff. We can’t wait to return someday with friends.
